While MDM is the preferred method of enrolment there are guides to manually enrol devices which can be found here. Device enrolment is split into three categories: students, staff and guests, with sub-categories for each enrolment type (BYOD, school- owned and shared devices) and operating system (Windows, MacOS, iOS and Android).
This method requires a hands-on approach and can take time (up to a few minutes per device), therefore it may not be suitable for bulk deployment.
Manual device enrolment overview
The personal device enrollment process for a dedicated user is as follows. On a school’s Secure Access network, you’ll need to connect to the internet, use a private browser to access your school’s Wi-Fi enrolment URL, and log in with your school account. Then, select ‘Personal Device’ if the user is a teacher, download and install the Network Profile to connect to the school Wi-Fi. The process details differ depending on the operating system, device model and enrollment type, BYOD, shared or school-owned.
Note: while device enrolment is a one-off process, devices enrolled via the N4L enrolment portal are provided with a certificate that expires after 3 years which will require re-enrolment. It is recommended that this be taken into consideration if planning a schools device lifecycle.
